Depressed?....Sleep Tips

Depressed? Sleep well..

If you are suffering from depression then some good sleep may help you recover, says a new study.

A study by researchers at the University of Rochester presented in Denver last week found that depressed patients with insomnia are nearly 11 times more likely to still be depressed after six months than those sleeping well, and 17 times more likely to remain ill after a year, reports UPI.

This study is considered the first to establish that insomnia prolongs bouts of sadness, hopelessness and loss of interest in activities that characterise major depression, making patients less likely to recover. Sleep could be a potential treatment for major depression, the study said.

The findings are based on data drawn from Project IMPACT, a study in late-life depression that enrolled 1,801 men and women aged 65 years or older.

In recent years, researchers have determined that insomnia and depression are linked, but have been unclear as to which came first. Many experts believed that depression caused insomnia until new drugs arrived that improved depression, but not insomnia.
